A gyrus (gyri; plural) is the outward shape of the folds – or ‘hills’ – on the brain. It is surrounded by sulci (suclus; singular) which are depressions – or ‘valleys’ – of the folds. Together gyri and sulci provide the brain with more surface area and are responsible for its convoluted appearance.
